Betty Jean McCord Gray

Betty Jean McCord Gray, 96 of Flemingsburg, Kentucky formerly of Cowan, departed this life on Sunday, May 19, 2024 at  Saint Joseph Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky.

She was born May 4, 1928 in Fleming County a daughter of the late Verner E. McCord and the late Permelia Vanlandingham McCord.

Betty enjoyed working with her flowers, gardening, cheering on her favorite sports teams, UK Wildcats, Cincinnati Reds, and the Fleming County Panthers. Most of all she enjoyed hosting family gatherings at her home with her family and grandchildren. She was the oldest member of the Pleasant Ridge Christian Church in Cowan.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Stanley Eugene Gray; her daughter, Emily Frances Gaunce and her husband Gary Gaunce; her loving uncle, Richard T. (Dickie) Vanlandingham; and one sister, Sue McCord Johnson.

Survivors include her two sons, Norman J. Gray and his wife Willas of Poplar Plains, Kentucky and Gregory Dale Gray and his wife Kathy of Cowan; daughter, Eva Colgan and her husband John of Flemingsburg; one granddaughter, Oneida Sounder and her husband Rick of Poplar Plains and one grandson, Todd Gaunce of Carlisle, Kentucky; three great grandchildren. Isaiah Gaunce  and his wife Macie, Madison Souder and Riley Souder; two great-great grandchildren, Kason Gaunce and Kamden Gaunce; and also several other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Friday May 24, 2024 at the Pleasant Ridge Christian Church in Cowan with Brother Dean Brewer and Brother Tommy Fern officiating.  

Betty will be laid to rest in the family plot at the Elizaville Cemetery with Brother Rodney Pollitt and Brother Rick Souder performing final rites.


Visitation will be after 5:00 P.M. Thursday May 23, 2024, at the church.

Casket bearers will be Todd Gaunce, John Colgan, Rick Souder, Isaiah Gaunce, Kason Gaunce, Dennis Forte, Ronnie Fern, and Tommy Fern.
